Sacrifice and accomplishment

“He who would accomplish little must sacrifice little; he who would achieve much must sacrifice much; he who would attain highly must sacrifice greatly.”

— James Allen

Reflection

Accomplishment never happens by accident. James Allen reminds us that every level of achievement requires a corresponding level of sacrifice. We often admire the visible triumphs of others—the success, the discipline, the excellence—but we rarely see the unseen exchanges that made those results possible. Sacrifice is not punishment; it is the deliberate releasing of one thing to gain something greater. It is an inward choice to forgo the trivial so the meaningful can grow.

Sacrifice clarifies priorities. When you choose what you are willing to give up, you simultaneously declare what truly matters. You stop scattering your energy and begin directing it toward a single, worthy aim. And once your effort is focused, progress accelerates.

The danger is believing you can achieve greatly without giving greatly. High attainment has always required letting go—of comfort, excuses, distractions, and at times even good things that compete with the best things.

But sacrifice also brings joy. It strengthens character, sharpens intention, and reveals resilience you did not know you had. Above all, it aligns you with the divine principle that growth always costs something, yet always rewards more than it requires.

Greatness is never purchased cheaply. But the life you become in the process is worth every surrender.

And that’s worth thinking about.

Putting It Into Practice

  • Identify one comfort you must release to reach your next level.
  • Write down the goal your sacrifice is meant to serve.
  • Choose one daily habit to surrender in favor of a better one.

One Question To Ponder

What great outcome in your life is worth the sacrifice it requires?
